This weekend I had a chance to look in amazing collection of memories Ankitha ( my sis ) had in her bag, which ranged from her first friendship band, a gift wrapper on her SSC pass gift, a currency note from Anitha Kakiji etc, it amused me at her level of sincerity and passion for this memorabilia. Am very bad at this and cant store any thing for loner, and have the history of loosing 5 mobiles, 3 wallets and one heart ( this one number of times ). As soon as I reached Bangalore, I tried to find some thing in a big cartoon (which I am carrying from Hyd to Jaipur, Jaipur to Bangalore) memorable so that I can show it to Yankee( Ankitha ) that this is special to me, but apart from torn vests and briefs, socks, bus tickets and few bills, I was finding nothing, then I thought its not my cup of tea. Disappointed with this, I browsed the bills and found some thing interesting, a television bill, which had a beautiful memory which I am sharing with you all in this blog.
Television set is your lovely companion if you are away from your family (5 years back) and it was missing in my room when I started staying alone in Hyderabad and desired to buy a new one. It was an era when there were direct outlets were setup by companies, I have walked in Samsung Home Appliances in Kacheguda to buy a new one, I was welcomed by the salesman as If I went to see his daughter, amazing marketing skills, both want to ensure that the guest likes the offer. My response was to him was “Tea with Biscuits” when he had offered me “Sir, Teaa” “coffeeaa”. He has showed me a wide variety of TV sets, few which were beyond my budget (even now) and few which were non-sense for my choice. Finally I have shortlisted two models ( I mean TV sets, Crap minds, don’t think any thing else) which were suiting my budget and of the two there was one which I have personally liked it but it was dearer by 1500 bucks. I tried my best to convince the salesman and now he was acting as Bridegrooms father who was bargaining on dowry and was adamant with his offer price. Indecisive about the price, I thought of stepping out of the showroom to check with my family members if I should go for the better one or best one for my happiness.
But before I could do so, I saw a bunch of kids strangling with each other to occupy the narrow sitting space on the railings of the staircase outside. Their faces and bodies were smeared with dirt all over. Half naked in their torn rags, they belonged to the class, which in the night, sleeps on footpath and in the morning, beg alms. Surprisingly, they all were giggling, showing their few teeth and more gaps. I wondered and turned back only to find that all the giant and small TV sets were now treating those kids’ with the Cartoon Network channel. Amused, I resumed my gaze back at those poor kids, dirty kids, yet happy kids. They were enjoying in unison. All of a sudden I felt a pinch in my heart. On one side, inside the showroom, were more not so happy people like me, who were thinking of whether taking back home ‘only happiness’ with a good TV set or ‘more happiness’ with a better TV set, and on the other side, were these kids who were cherishing happiness in whatever form they were receiving it. Seeing them encash their share of happiness in this way touched me and taught me that in the rat race of accumulating more happiness, we all are ultimately letting ourselves drift into the zones of unhappiness.
Happy at this learning, I thanked the salesman who tunes the Cartoon Network channel everyday for his little guests. I didn’t call my family members and bought the cheaper TV set with less 1500 bucks and have spent 250 rupees on buying chocolates for those kids, and bought Happiness for life time. From that day,I have decided that if ever I get a discount on any thing I buy, I would buy some chocolates for these kids and fill in my memorabilia.
And today am watching this song played in TV ( Please humm the song with the tune and music in your mind while reading)
“Aisi ulji nazar unse hatt ti nahi
Daant se reshmi dor katt ti nahi
Umar kab ki baras ke safaid ho gayi
Kaari badari jawani ki chatt ti nahi
Walla ye dhadkan bhadne lagi hai
Chehre ki rangat udne lagi hai
Darr lagta hai tanha sone mein ji
Dil to bachcha hai ji
Dil to bachcha hai ji
Thoda kaccha hai ji
Haan dil to baccha hai ji”
Ankitha – I feel you will like my memorabilia too, if yes, you too do what I do. This is also my request to other lovely reader I have.
Wishing you a prosperous new year.
